President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, stressed on Tuesday that climate change is a serious global challenge, but it can be confronted and reduced.
"Climate change is a serious global challenge, but we can confront and reduce it through international collective action, and this is what we emphasized today at the World Leaders Summit for Climate Action at the COP29 in Baku," Sheikh Mohammed wrote in a tweet via his official account on the (X) platform.
He added: "The UAE is keen to support this path and cooperate with various parties in the world to enhance climate action and implement the outcomes of climate conferences, most notably the historic (UAE Agreement) resulting from COP28 for a better future for humanity."
Under the slogan "Solidarity for a Green World," Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed participated in the opening of the World Leaders' Summit for Climate Action on Tuesday, which was part of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), hosted by Azerbaijan from November 11-22.
The two-day summit discusses ways to strengthen international cooperation, provide climate finance, and assist developing and Global South nations in addressing the negative effects of climate change.
The summit includes a high-level roundtable that focuses on achieving a fair, logical, and gradual transition in the energy sector for all, with the aim of enhancing global efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change, with the participation of heads of state, governments, and other senior officials. This roundtable represents a continuation of the achievements of the COP28 and the historic "UAE Agreement."
On Monday, the activities of the COP29 kicked off in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, with broad international participation to present a renewed vision aimed at accelerating global climate action by linking global priorities to real capabilities and transforming them into tangible and fair results.
In the main session on Monday, the UAE handed over the presidency of the Conference of the Parties to the Republic of Azerbaijan, continuing the UAE’s role as a key partner in promoting global climate diplomacy efforts.
