Dubai has once again been crowned the cleanest city in the world, marking its fifth consecutive year at the top, according to the latest Global Power City Index (GPCI) report from the Institute for Urban Strategies at the Mori Memorial Foundation in Japan.
This achievement reinforces the emirate’s leadership and excellence in global standards, establishing Dubai as a model for future cities that provide a sustainable urban environment and a high quality of life for all residents and visitors.
Dubai surpassed over 47 cities around the globe by attaining a perfect 100% satisfaction rate in the cleanliness index, part of the environmental axis used to measure the strengths of cities.
This success is attributed to the coordinated efforts of Dubai Municipality teams, working with both public and private sector partners. They follow comprehensive plans, strategies, programs, and projects for the integrated management of waste operations to maintain the city's cleanliness and aesthetically pleasing urban environment. This is aligned with Dubai's Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2041, which aims to reduce waste production by 18% and eliminate landfill waste by 2041.
Marwan bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, emphasized that Dubai's top position in prestigious global indicators results from a concerted effort to make the city the best place in the world to live, work, and visit. He noted that Dubai's achievements across various fields reflect the vision of its wise leadership, which encourages a work ethic aimed at reaching exceptional standards.
Ghalita added that achieving excellence requires steadfast belief in the capabilities of work teams and a commitment to effort. This mindset transforms shared goals into a consistent work style aimed at leadership. Today, Dubai stands as a city that believes in its people and strives to set the standard for future urban developments.
He acknowledged that the accomplishment would not have been possible without the collaborative spirit of the Dubai Municipality's cleaning teams, comprising over 3,200 cleaning engineers and supervisors. They have played a crucial role in maintaining Dubai's cleanliness and enhancing its beauty and sustainability over the past five years.
The cleaning and sustainability system at Dubai Municipality operates daily throughout the year, using an advanced fleet of 855 vehicles, machines, and equipment specialized for optimal operational efficiency.
Further efforts include an effective operational system with daily monitoring of cleaning operations that cover main roads and expressways spanning 2,400 km, investment areas covering 1,419 square kilometers, and maintaining the cleanliness of water channels and creeks that stretch 33.4 km. The scope of work also includes monitoring residential, industrial, and desert areas, as well as markets, waste storage, and maintenance practices.
Additionally, programs are in place to handle hazardous and medical waste, offer electronic services for disposing of household furniture, and manage the removal of abandoned vehicles and equipment. Dubai Municipality also employs electronic systems to oversee private sector vehicles involved in waste collection and transportation.
Moreover, Dubai Municipality champions innovative technologies aimed at conserving natural resources, maximizing energy efficiency, and reducing carbon emissions. This includes developing smart methods for collecting, storing, and transporting waste to ensure sustainability.
Guided by its vision, “A Pioneering Municipality for a Global City,” Dubai Municipality remains committed to delivering outstanding municipal services. These efforts preserve Dubai’s civilized image, protect its environment, and enhance the sustainability of natural resources. The Municipality also supports the creation of an environmentally friendly waste management system, positioning Dubai as the world’s most sustainable city while fostering the highest levels of quality of life and happiness for its residents.
