The global climate action summit "COP29" kicked off on Tuesday in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, with the participation of leaders from countries and governments around the world.
The summit aims to achieve sustainable development in order to maintain the possibility of reaching the 1.5-degree target, which is crucial for the protection of the planet.
Over two days, the summit discusses ways to improve international cooperation to provide climate financing and support for Global South countries and developing nations as they deal with the negative effects of climate change.
The summit includes a high-level roundtable focused on achieving a fair, rational, and gradual transition in the energy sector for all, to enhance global efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Leaders of countries and governments, along with other senior officials, will participate in this, representing a continuation of the achievements of the "COP28" and the historic "UAE Agreement."
The "UAE Agreement" is a global plan to get the energy sector to climate neutrality by 2050. The agreement encompasses significant objectives such as eliminating all traditional fuel sources that do not reduce emissions, tripling the use of renewable energy, doubling energy conservation, and accelerating the adoption of low-emission technologies such as nuclear energy, renewable energy, and removal and mitigation technologies by 2030.
In line with the outcomes of the global stocktake and the ambitious goals it sets, the presidency of "COP29" focuses on implementing the energy goals approved at "COP28" in the UAE and ensuring that just and equitable energy transitions are an essential part of climate dialogues.
The conference represents an important opportunity to drive international efforts toward accelerating climate action and finding solutions to address global climate challenges.
The presidency of the Conference of the Parties has proposed 14 initiatives covering various areas such as climate sustainability, clean hydrogen, reducing methane emissions from organic waste, and green digital work while enhancing the linkage between climate action and achieving sustainable development goals within a comprehensive and equitable framework.
"COP29" is a crucial milestone for parties and stakeholders as they consider necessary measures to maintain the possibility of achieving the 1.5-degree target and announce new actions that can contribute to accelerating the transition to clean and inclusive energy during this decade.
The conference also encourages countries, business leaders, civil society, financial institutions, and international organizations to announce new practical steps during the conference that contribute to accelerating the energy transition with the participation of high ambitions for nationally determined contributions and global climate action.
