The UAE announced the launch of its initiative to establish the "Global Energy Efficiency Alliance."
The initiative aims to improve global energy consumption efficiency, aiming for an annual doubling of energy efficiency rates by 2030. It also seeks to reduce carbon emissions and decrease the consumption of natural resources through collaboration among countries, institutions, and companies, aligning with the global commitment established by the historic "UAE Consensus" at COP28.
Soeaking to Emirates News Agency (WAM), Engineer Sharif Al-Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, stated that the launch of the "Global Energy Efficiency Alliance" came in response to a global desire to enhance energy efficiency. "Discussions were held with many countries, all of which welcomed the establishment of the alliance," he added.
Speaking from the UAE's national pavilion events at COP29 in Azerbaijan, Al-Olama emphasized that the UAE will play a pioneering role in the alliance by offering its best practices in energy efficiency, sharing knowledge, and providing partnership models with the private sector.
UAE's Goals at COP29
Al-Olama called on governments, organizations, and leaders to join the alliance and unite efforts to set ambitious goals that would encourage investments in energy efficiency projects, as well as the development of policies and technologies to achieve sustainability targets.
Al-Olama noted that the alliance's establishment aims to reduce carbon emissions and consumption of natural resources through enhanced knowledge exchange, capacity-building, partnerships between the public and private sectors, and harmonizing standards. It also seeks to encourage investments in energy efficiency projects and the development of policies and technologies necessary for sustainability goals.
Moreover, Al-Olama added that the alliance aims to gather leading practices in energy efficiency applied in participating countries and share them with other nations, particularly in Africa, which needs such initiatives involving financial and technological solutions.
Al-Olama further stated that the ministry's participation in COP29 is to continue building on the achievements of COP28 and enhance international cooperation to implement the historic "UAE Consensus," which set a new course for global climate action.
Additionally, he mentioned that the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is participating in several ministerial sessions at COP29, supporting Azerbaijan's presidency on several climate initiatives, including the "Energy Storage and Hydrogen Initiative" and the "Green Corridor." He noted that COP29 presents an important opportunity to strengthen international cooperation and partnerships in line with the outcomes of COP28, particularly with the goal of tripling renewable energy production and doubling energy efficiency.
