The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) clinched the Gold Award in the Best Waste Diversion/Reduction Initiative (Government Sector) category at the 6th edition of the Middle East Waste & Recycling (MEWAR) Awards.

This accolade acknowledges the agency’s pivotal role in waste diversion and reduction in Abu Dhabi, underlining EAD’s innovative approach and commitment to sustainability.

MEWAR is a notable event in the region's sustainability sector, recognizing outstanding waste management, recycling, and resource recovery practices. The sixth edition celebrated trailblazers and innovators across 17 environmental categories.

EAD’s award underscores its dedication to the ambitious goal of net zero waste by 2041, aligning with the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Strategy. Through various projects and initiatives, the agency aims to reduce waste, enhance recycling rates, and promote a circular economy. This recognition highlights EAD's adherence to global sustainability standards and its efforts to foster environmental stewardship.

Faisal Al Hammadi, Executive Director of the Environmental Quality Sector at EAD, said, “It is such an honor to be recognized for our efforts in waste management by such a prestigious magazine and its team of waste management experts. This achievement reflects the forward-thinking vision of Abu Dhabi's leadership, whose unwavering support and guidance have been instrumental in shaping the emirate's sustainability journey. By following their directions, EAD has successfully implemented robust policies and strategic initiatives that address waste management challenges while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. This recognition motivates us to continue innovating and driving sustainable solutions that support Abu Dhabi's vision for a cleaner future.”

EAD is committed to updating regulatory tools to support a robust, future-proof waste management framework. Regulatory advancements, such as the Integrated Waste Management Regulation and Waste Classification System, are key to improving waste management in the emirate.

Salem Mubarak Al Breiki, Division Director of Waste Management at EAD, said, “This award is a testament to Abu Dhabi's unwavering commitment to sustainability and innovation in waste management. Through strategic initiatives and cutting-edge projects, EAD aims to create a transformative model in the emirate of Abu Dhabi that not only minimizes waste but also ensures a more sustainable future for our communities. We are proud to lead this effort and to be recognised by such a prestigious platform.”

The award jury praised EAD’s long-term sustainability vision supported by infrastructure development, including new waste treatment facilities, material recovery facilities, and waste-to-energy projects. These initiatives aim to close all landfills by 2026 and create alternative engineered landfills. The success of these projects is driven by thorough analysis, benchmarking, and strong public-private partnerships.

EAD's waste segregation experiment for multi-storey buildings provided valuable data, fostering future expansion. The agency plans six incentive programs to promote circular economy principles, reward waste reduction, and boost recycling and treatment rates.
