One of the data that tourism and travel companies rely on is the sustainability of tourist destinations. This is due to the increasing interest in this factor when determining tourist destinations.
The list of the most sustainable countries in Europe has been revealed, which is of interest to those looking to visit a green destination within the continent in 2024.
According to "Time Out" magazine, this list included the greenest countries in Europe this year, based on data collected through the European Environment Agency, according to a study of several key factors including recycling rates in these countries, and rates of carbon dioxide emissions in the air in these countries.
Most Sustainable European Countries in 2024
According to the study results, Norway came in first place as the most sustainable European country for the year 2024, due to the majority of energy generated for daily consumption in Norway coming from renewable eco-friendly sources.
Austria came in the second place on the list, as one of the most sustainable European countries for 2024. The reason was that Austrians like to use public transportation and are conscientious about recycling (second-highest recycling rate). The capital, Vienna, aims to be CO2 neutral by 2040.
In third place comes Finland thanks to its policies in addressing the effects of climate change announced as a national policy starting from July 2022.
About 80 percent of Finland is forested, which is why its air and drinking water quality are considered some of the best in the world. The country aims to reduce its carbon emissions by 60% by 2030 (compared to 2022) and by 90% by 2050.
In the fourth place comes Iceland where almost 100% of the country is powere by renewable energy and is considered one of the countries with the lowest CO2 emissions in the world. The Nordic volcanic island nation aims to be completely carbon neutral by 2024.
Sweden comes in the fifth place, thanks to its large forested areas, exemplary recycling policies, and extensive use of renewable energy. It aims to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.
Estonia came in sixth place, then Germany in seventh among the greenest countries to visit in Europe in 2024, followed by Luxembourg in eighth place.
Switzerland comes in ninth place with 48 mountains over 4,000 meters high. Environmentally friendly practices for recycling, waste reduction, and sustainable building principles are implemented.
