The COP presidencies “Troika”, including the UAE (COP28), Azerbaijan (COP29), and Brazil (COP30), continues discussions to assess the “Roadmap to the 1.5°C Goal” as part of COP29 events, currently hosted by Baku.
The “Troika” discussed on Wednesday the progress made in implementing the global stocktake results and the remaining gaps in developing and executing ambitious climate policies for the next rounds of nationally determined contributions (NDCs), according to Emirates News Agency (WAM).
The meeting has reportedly boosted cohesion among COP presidencies and set clear priorities and strategic actions needed for 2025 to build on COP28 outcomes, implement COP29 results, and prepare for COP30.
The “Troika” underlines the commitment of the three COP presidency countries—COP28, hosted by the UAE last year; COP29, currently hosted by Azerbaijan; and COP30, to be held in Brazil next year—to deliver NDCs aligned with the 1.5°C goal and guided by the provisions of the historic UAE Consensus, by early 2025.
Solidarity for a Green World
Meanwhile, the two-day World Leaders’ Climate Action Summit concluded on Wednesday. The summit was held as part of COP29, hosted by Azerbaijan and running through November 22 under the theme “Solidarity for a Green World.”
Among the 70,000 registered delegates for COP29, 80 heads of state, government, and deputy heads attended the World Leaders’ Climate Action Summit.
COP29 events kicked off on Monday in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, with broad international participation, with the aim of presenting a renewed vision to accelerate global climate action by aligning global priorities with realistic capacities and turning them into tangible and equitable outcomes.
During the opening session, the UAE handed over the COP presidency to Azerbaijan, while continuing its role as a key partner in promoting global climate diplomacy efforts.
COP29 serves as a critical milestone for parties and stakeholders to reflect on the necessary measures to keep the 1.5°C target achievable and to agree on new actions that can contribute to accelerating the transition to inclusive and clean energy within this decade.
The conference also encourages countries, business leaders, civil society, financial institutions, and international organizations to announce new practical steps to accelerate the energy transition, aligning ambitious NDCs with global climate action.
